After being founded in 1934 by current owner Nigel’s grandfather, W Alderson & Son is now in its third generation. The butchers works with other local suppliers to provide people of Darlington with the freshest produce on the market.

 

We talk to owner, Nigel Alderson.

 

How long have you been open?

Since 1934, started by my grandfather.

 

What is your favourite thing about running a small business?

Being my own boss.

 

What does quality mean to you?

Everything, without it we wouldn’t get the customers returning.

 

What is your favourite way to enjoy milk?

Over cereal.

 

Describe your business in three words.

Established, quality, traditional.

 

What is your favourite product in the shop?

Our steaks.

 

How do you like your eggs?

Poached.

 

When’s your favourite time of day?

6 am, when I can most things done before the busyness of the day starts.

 

Tell us something random about you or your business?

The business was started by my Grandfather in 1934, my father took it through its 50th year in 1984 and my goal is to take it through its centenary in 2034.

 

How do you choose which products to stock?

Customer demand and industry influences.

 

How well do you know your customers?

Very well! Most of our customers are loyal regulars and we get to know each other over the years.
